Chapter 386: No Biggie
"W-W-WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE TURN OF EVENTS!! PARDON MY INCOMPETENCE BUT NO ONE'S WORDS WOULD EVER HAVE KEPT UP WITH SUCH SUDDEN DEVELOPMENTS!!! ONE MOMENT, SHYE CROWLEY'S NECK WAS STABBED, YET MIRACULOUSLY, IT TURNED OUT THAT THE DAGGER SOMEHOW DIDN'T PIERCE THROUGH THE SKIN. AND NOW, THE ELUSIVE SCOUT HAS BEEN GRABBED BY HIS NECK!! WHAT A BRUTISH MAGE!! NEVER HAVE I EVER SEEN ONE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!!"
[Congratulations! You've earned 48,920 points!]
The commentator was losing his mind.
He never expected that he would ever experience commentating such a mind-boggling match.
Meanwhile, inside their respective preparation rooms, two rookies stared at the holographic screen with a grim look.
Arthur and Almira had some questions in their minds.
First, how could Shye be so adept at melee exchanges?
Second, how could he have the strength to simply grab someone like John Oni by the neck as though the guy was a helpless little chick?
Lastly, they recognized the skill he used at the last moment, [Stoic], as both of them had learned the skill themselves.
Did Shye…actually have a subclass at such a young age?
They both resisted believing such a notion.
Their only solace lay in the possibility of alternative explanations for Shye's extraordinary abilities, ones that eluded their current understanding.
Otherwise, the mere notion of Shye Crowley possessing a warrior subclass was unsettlingly daunting, suggesting he was far beyond their league.
Why? Because they would never be able to achieve such a feat at such an age even if they went back in time while retaining their current memories.
It was simply not humanly possible.
…On the stage, the young scout, John Oni, had already lost consciousness. His limp body remained suspended in the air, ruthlessly grabbed by Shye by the throat.
*FWING!*
Moments later, the man's body finally turned into an azure ray of light, materializing into an unharmed John Oni outside the stage.
Well…Physically unharmed, at least. The guy was mentally dying. He couldn't believe how badly he lost to Shye, a mere mage.
If his family got wind of how humiliating his defeat was, he would be reprimanded big time—possibly even disqualifying him from the family's succession battle. Although his father would take revenge for him, he'd rather keep things under wraps as it would be more advantageous for him in the long run.
'I'll kill you one day…'
Standing up with surprisingly cold calmness after a disastrous defeat, John left the arena. He didn't even return to the preparation room, where his guild master and his personnel were waiting.
Naturally, Shye was unaware of what was going on inside John's head. Nor did he care.
If the guy couldn't defeat him now, it would be even more improbable in the future…right?
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA BANOOB! ALAN! PAY UP! GIVE ME MY FIVE GOLD COINS! WOOHOOO!!!"
As everyone was busy admiring Shye, who was strolling back to his guild's designated preparation area, the anticipated voice that had slipped their minds amid the victory suddenly echoed throughout the entire arena, causing heads to turn towards its origin swiftly.
"C-Can you leave us with at least one gold? We still need to eat…"
"Hmmph, fine. I shall not be merciless this time, however, next time I will not be so kind! Nyahahahaha!"
Ruthlessly grabbing four gold coins from the dejected Banar's hand, Seira returned to her seat in a fantastic mood.
Now, she could buy luxurious meals for her family without affecting her winnings should Shye win in the grand finals.
Meanwhile, back at the Raven's Blade preparation room, multiple old men jumped up and down in celebration as though they were children.
"MHMM!! Men, settle down. Crowley will arrive any time now." Corvus cleared his throat, lightly reprimanding the overly excited old men.
He was excited himself, however, as the guild master, he could not lose his composure as he had to maintain an air of dignity around his underlings.
This was why he didn't reprimand the foolish old men too much.
After all, this was the first time their guild branch was able to enter the grand finals, hence, their exaggerated enthusiasm was rather understandable.
"Guild Master Corvus, respected seniors, I'm back," Shye said with a serene smile as he entered the preparation room.
He arrived a bit earlier, however, upon hearing the old men's jolly celebrations, he couldn't help but chuckle outside the room for a while and give them ample time to reorganize their appearances.
Shye grew quite fond of these supportive old men, thus, he would spare them the humiliation since he had the option to.
"Crowley!! Well done! You've brilliantly brought honor to the guild!"
"Crowley! That was a fantastic performance, come, let me hug you!"
"Crowley!! Great job! Let me give you a kiss!"
Listening to the boisterous remarks of the elderly gentlemen, Shye found himself unable to suppress a smile. Yet, he found no opportunity to respond individually to each of them, for the guild master had promptly approached him, wearing an appreciative smile.
"Congratulations, Crowley, for advancing to the finals of the competition. Whether you emerge victorious or not in the upcoming match, I intend to present you with a gift from our guild branch. Of course, should you triumph, the rewards will be more substantial."
"Remember, our guild stands firmly behind you, offering unwavering support in all your pursuits. The finals are no exception; therefore, go forth without concern for the outcome." Corvus sincerely said, making Shye wince inwardly.
'These guys are way too serious, no?' He thought, not realizing the gravity of his achievement.
In his mind, his opponents were random "geniuses" from a random city who were meant to be his stepping stones, and he didn't really encounter any difficulties when fighting that supposedly strong John dude.
Arthur Vermicelli should be no different.
Thus, Shye was unaware of the magnitude of his contributions to the guild for advancing to the finals and how…pleasant the rewards would be.
'It's just Balkrow City's Rookie Adventurer Competition…why are they making it out to be such a big deal?'
After all, his true goal was the rookie competition in Valenzia where he would…hehehe…earn lots of points and glory for himself.
